January 14, 2008, the world lost an entreprenurial shining star.
Richard Knerr passed away at the age of 82 after suffering a stroke earlier in the day. What? You don't recognize the name? Perhaps if I told you he was the co-founder of Wham-O, bells might start ringing. Perhaps if I mentioned the cornerstones of the Wham-O product line - the Frisbee, the Hula Hoop, Silly String, the Slip-N-Slide, the hacky sack - your childhood would come rushing back to you like the ground to a skydiver in freefall. Where would we all be without these classic toys that challenged our minds (or at least our gross motor skills) and kept us entertained for hours on end on those days when Mom said "Get outside and don't come back in till it's dark!"?
Thank you, Mr. Knerr, and Godspeed. I hope you had as much fun as you gave all of us.
